Construction on the playground at Iron Point Park in Flanders is set begin in April after months of planning and fundraising. The park will be geared towards children 5 to 12 years old with plans for the addition of a toddlers section in the upcoming year.
Last April, The Southampton Town Youth Bureau received a grant from KaBoom and Dr Pepper Snapple Group as part of the company's Let's Play program, an initiative which aims towards getting children active by building or mending 2,000 playgrounds across the U.S. by the end of 2013. One of the grant requirements is the Youth Bureau must raise matching funds which they are close to doing through fundraising which included car washes and a jewelry party as well as the support from the Flanders, Riverside, the Town of Southampton, Northampton Civic Association (FRNCA), Riverhead Building Supply, and the Bay View Pines Civic Association.
"The playground will be a great addition to the park and will be ready for young families to enjoy right in time for the start of the Flanders Little League season," said Councilman Chris Nuzzi
. "The youth in Flanders represent a large portion of their population so it's important that they have places where they can enjoy being outdoors and get physical activity."
Another requirement of the grant is the construction of the playground must be a community project. To comply with this grant stipulation The Town has scheduled a "Build Day" on Saturday April 13, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Iron Point Park which is located at the end of Wood Road Trail in Flanders. The Town estimates approximately one hundred volunteers are needed to help complete the playground. Tools, supplies, and refreshments will be provided during the "Build Day".
