Southampton- With gas prices averaging $4.00 per gallon, Manhattan garage parking rates at $25.00 per hour or above and meter rates below 96th Street at $3.00 per hour (if you can actually find a space), why would anyone want to drive to New York City?

Ride the Legend! Yes, the Hampton Jitney is the only way to go and to really take advantage of this comfortable, convenient and eco-friendly form of transport, you must get your Value Packs before December 31, 2012 during their Annual Value Pack Sale. Even at full fare the Jitney is a bargain, but why not save a few bucks and sport for an extra Bombay Sapphire Martini at The Campbell Apartment, Madison & Vine or The Carnegie Club?

As a Hampton journalist sometimes covering five events a weekend in Manhattan during the Hamptons off-season over the past 20 years, I considered myself the ultimate road warrior. Frankly, with an "ability-to-find-a-free-parking-space" acumen that would astonish, but Mayor Bloomberg I surrender!

His Honor is determined to make Manhattan a car-free zone and between the reduction in street parking space availability, the rules regarding parking hours posted on signs that, frankly, a course should be offered as a theoretical linguistics elective at Columbia University to translate, and fees that make a loan shark's rates seem less than usury, even this Manhattan wheel-man has given up!

Trust me; from the North Fork or the South Fork, the Hampton Jitney is the only way to travel to Manhattan. Saving 31-40% by buying the Value Packs make it an even more obvious no-brainer, but you only have until December 31 to purchase them. Hey, spring for the uber-luxurious Hampton Jitney's Ambassador Service discounted Value Pack and you might be sitting across the aisle from Alan Cummings. That would make for an interesting trip.
