Are we in for another dreary six weeks of winter weather, or will we be treated to an early spring? On Groundhog Day, Quigley, resident groundhog of the Save the Animals Rescue (STAR) Foundation of Middle Island, will offer his prediction during the Quogue Library’s Fourth Annual Groundhog Day Celebration.
“We are very happy to welcome Quigley and the STAR rescue team back to Quogue, continuing our Groundhog Day traditions,” said Susan McKenna, Director of Operations. Presented in partnership with the Village of Quogue Code Enforcement and the Quohog Inner Circle Shadow Society of Whistle Pig Interpretation, Prognostication, Whisky, Beer, Bacon and Bongos Club (a recognized organization by the Punxsutawney Phil Club), this year’s festivities will be live streamed via Facebook Live (Facebook.com/QuogueLibrary) because of the pandemic.
As the legend goes, if Quigley, the prognosticating groundhog, sees his shadow, be prepared to bundle up for a few more weeks. If he doesn’t, 2021 will see an early spring.
Quogue Code Enforcement officer, Chris Osborne, will also be onsite to represent the local chapter of the Punxsutawney Phil Club and serve as the Master of Ceremonies – and official whistle-pig translator, donning his official (stovepipe) hat, of course.
The Groundhog Day Celebration will take place on Tuesday, February 2 at 10:00 a.m.
Quigley calls the Save the Animals Rescue Foundation home. The organization’s mission is “to mitigate the damage done to the wild population through the progress of humans.” It does so by offering advice to the public regarding how to manage wild animals discovered in homes or areas they shouldn’t be, offering permanent placement and adoption programs, as well as wildlife rehabilitation, and hosting training classes.
Whether spring comes early, or there’s more winter on the horizon, the Quogue Library is greatly looking forward to the next couple of months, as construction of the newly renovated library is expected to be finished in March or April. In the meantime, in addition to the virtual Groundhog Day Celebration, Quogue Library is presenting a myriad of digital programming for all ages.
