Internationally renowned architectural firms, Rafael Viñoly Architects, which is based in New York City, and HKS Architects, which has offices in Dallas, New Delhi, London, Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York, have been selected as the design team for the new Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, which will be located at the Stony Brook University Southampton Campus.
“Both Rafael Viñoly Architects and HKS Architects are global firms who together bring us brilliant architectural talent and deep and broad healthcare expertise,” Ken Wright, Chairman of the Southampton Hospital Association (SHA), relayed.
Recent Rafael Viñoly Architects projects include the Penn Medicine Complex in Philadelphia, the New Stanford Hospital at the Stanford University Medical Center in California, and the University of Chicago Medicine Center, Center for Care and Discovery, while HKS Architects spearheaded the Akron Children’s Hospital in Akron, Ohio, Mercy Hospital in Joplin, Missouri, and Moncrief Cancer Institute in Fort Worth, Texas.
“They have built community hospitals and academic medical centers and are keenly adept at solving cultural, technological and environmental concerns, as well as those of function, with unique and unprecedented solutions and inspired designs,” Wright relayed. “We are excited to have this vibrant team onboard to help us reshape the healthcare landscape on the East End.”
The 241,800 square feet new state-of-the-art facility, which will be housed on 15 acres of the Southampton campus of Stony Brook University, will replace the Hospital’s current Meeting House Lane location, which dates back to 1924. The estimated $305 million project has a targeted opening set for 2025.
“Through our partnership with the Southampton Hospital Association, Stony Brook Medicine continues to bring new life-changing technology and services to the East End community,” said Kenneth Kaushansky, MD, MACP, Senior Vice President, Health Sciences and Dean of the Renaissance School of Medicine at Stony Brook University. “The new facility will provide another opportunity in which academic medicine can help build on the leading healthcare programs offered by Stony Brook Southampton Hospital.”
Rafael Viñoly Architects and HKS Architects will work together to execute all phases of design, documentation and construction. BR+A will serve as consulting engineers. While the architect search garnered a response from several notable firms, Rafael Viñoly Architects and HKS Architects were selected because of their “impressive experiences in the healthcare sector; a steadfast commitment to a collaborative process; the ability to bridge the elegance of iconic design with sustainability; and importantly, experience with, and respect for, the topography and legacy of the East End,” according to a press release.
“We are dedicated to building an environment that is patient-centric and enhances health and well-being,” Robert S. Chaloner, Chief Administrative Officer of Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, added. “Together Rafael Viñoly Architects and HKS Architects will help us realize our vision of transforming the delivery of healthcare on the East End to benefit our community for generations to come.”
