South Fork Natural History Museum (SoFo) will once again celebrate Turkey Day by opening its doors to the East End community during its Free Family Thanksgiving Open House on Saturday November 24.
Taking place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the event will include a blessing and traditional dancing presented by the Shinnecock Nation (11 a.m. to 12 p.m.) and the debut of SoFo’s exciting new shark research interactive exhibit, which was established to teach the community about SoFo’s Shark Research and Education Program. Shark experts will be onsite from 1 to 4 p.m. to chat about their findings and the program.
“Please join us for our Thanksgiving Open House and the unveiling of SoFo’s new state-of-the-art interactive shark exhibit,” said Frank Quevedo, executive director of the South Fork Natural History Museum. “This new hands-on exhibit will allow visitors to better understand various shark aspects, their ecological roles in the marine environment, and why there is a need to sustain shark populations through scientific research and education.”
The Shark Research and Education Program, a collaboration with the Long Island Shark Collaboration – the first group to deploy satellite tags on juvenile great white sharks off Long Island’s south shore, launched earlier this year. Its focus is conducting shark-focused science and providing the East End with outreach opportunities.
Additionally, the Open House will serve as the launch of SoFo’s 2018 Holiday Charity Drive, which will support Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) and the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons (ARF). From Saturday, November 24, 2018 until Wednesday, January 2, SoFo is accepting donations of gently used blankets, sheets, towels, new dog and cat toys, and monetary contributions for either or both organizations. SoFo will drop off Holiday Charity Drive donations to SASF and ARF on Saturday, January 5, 2019.
Admission to the Family Thanksgiving Open House is free, and reservations preferred, but not necessary.
