The Montauk Yacht Club, Montauk Chamber of Commerce, Marine Patrol and Montauk Station of the U.S. Coast Guard have teamed up for a Montauk Harbor Clean-Up ahead of the annual Blessing of the Fleet.
The cleanup will take place on Saturday, June 10, with volunteers meeting at the Montauk Yacht Club at 1 p.m. before heading to the harbor shoreline. Participants will be collecting debris and discarded items along the shoreline and also be trimming the sea grass.
“The harbor access areas collect debris and this community partnership initiative comes at a time when we need to spruce up the harbor front for the Blessing of the Fleet taking place the next day, Sunday, throughout our visitor high season and everyone who lives here,” explained Laraine Creegan, executive director for the Montauk Chamber of Commerce.
This cleanup is part of an outreach program spearheaded by Island Global Yachting through their “Inspire Giving through You” (IGY) program.
“The Inspire Giving through You initiative was started by IGY Marinas in 2015 by the CEO of IGY Marinas Thomas Mukamal,” noted Charlie Irons, GM of the Montauk Yacht Club. “The goal of the initiative is to engage the local community, the marina community and IGY employees on the islands and states in which IGY Marinas has locations.”
“IGY is done two times a year at specific locations and includes IGY Marinas corporate offices in Fort Lauderdale, New York and Greenville,” Mukamal added. In addition to the Hamptons, IGY events will be held in Manhattan, St. Petersburg, Florida, Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Greenville, South Carolina, Panama, Gainesville, Florida, and Charleston, South Carolina.
After the Montauk cleanup, a party will be held for all participants at the Yacht Club to thank them for their help.
