It’s time to cue Steve Harvey because on Tuesday, January 31st SAFE (Substance-Abuse-Free Environment) in Sag Harbor is presenting Pierson Whalers Family Feud, in conjunction with National Drug and Alcohol Facts Week, at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor.
Kym Laube of HUGS, Inc. will serve as the evening’s host and quiz participants about a wide range of subjects.
“We’ll be testing participants’ knowledge about high risk behaviors but also other topics of general interest,” Laube said. “And we’ll also unveil the results of the most recent local youth survey of drug and alcohol use. The more information we all have about high risk behaviors and the number of kids who undertake them, the better equipped we will all be to ensure all of our kids are safe.”
The friendly competition will test the knowledge of students from Pierson High School and Middle School who will play against their parents and teachers. If you’ve ever seen an episode of Family Feud, you’re already aware of the fact that you never know what priceless answer is going to come out of a contestant’s mouth when they’re pressed for time, so SAFE in Sag Harbor is inviting the community to come down to Bay Street to either watch or participate in the trivia showdown.
“The event is open to all, we are encouraging parents to attend with their children,” noted Michelle Wilks. “We leave it to the parent’s discretion as to how young/old the child can be – but I am comfortable that a mature 5th or 6th grader would be able to process the info. This will not be a graphic presentation. We want to familiarize everyone with the common myths out there are the bad decisions that our youth are making.”
Along with sponsoring this event, SAFE in Sag Harbor recently launched its website. Created as an informative resource for the community, the vital online tool includes information about the 12 Sector representatives, the Drug-free Communities staff and the Sag Harbor Coalition Directors, as well as details about upcoming SAFE in Sag Harbor events and links for valuable resources and statistics.
SAFE in Sag Harbor is a branch of Sag Harbor Coalition whose mission is “to engage our community to reduce drug, alcohol and other high risk behaviors use by our youth by implementing environmental changes and encouraging healthy alternative choices using evidence-based strategies.” SAFE in Sag Harbor has plans to continually keep the community informed by launching a periodical newsletter, continued email blasts, Public Service Announcements, newspaper articles and through its social media platforms.
Pierson Whalers Family Feud will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission is free.
