“Montauk Youth, Inc. is excited to bring back Montauk’s Scarecrow Days for its 6th year,” shared Maureen Rutkowski. “Years ago, we saw versions of this in other communities and thought it would be fun to bring to Montauk.”
Starting Friday, October 7th through Sunday, October 16th (if you want your entry judged), families, artists, businesses and the East End community can assist Montauk Youth, Inc. prepare for the autumn season by embellishing Montauk with a special creation – a scarecrow that they decorated. Participants may pick up their scarecrow frame at John’s Drive-In and that’s when they’ll learn where their entry will reside once you’ve added all the impressive, award worthy bells and whistles. Scarecrows may be embellished as you wish – whether you go a themed route, pay homage to your favorite Halloween tradition or go another jaw-dropping route. But, make sure to remember that this is a family-friendly contest, so keep candidates in good taste.
“The Days have been a resounding success, with anywhere from 20+ to 50+ scarecrows put up around Montauk the past few years,” she noted.
You can even make Scarecrow Days into an amusing game for friends and family by seeing who can locate the most contenders as they pop up around Montauk. “It’s such fun to drive or walk through town each day looking for new installations,” said Rutkowski. “Montauk does not disappoint: we have a lot of creative people out here.”
And for those who plan on decorating a Scarecrow, make sure to bring you’re A game because bragging rights are on the line. “This year we’ll be awarding prizes to top scarecrows,” she explained.
Even if you’re a little late to the decorating party, Rutkowski still encourages participants to showoff their masterpieces. “We’d love to see all up by the 16th, but hey, this is Montauk: we know how we all out here love to push our deadlines,” she said. “Judges will make the rounds the week leading up to Halloween.”
Montauk’s Scarecrow Days will be on display through Tuesday, November 1st.
