Celebrating her astounding perseverance, Kathleen King, creator of the simply magical Tate’s Cookies, will be featured in the League of Women Voters of the Hamptons’ upcoming luncheon where she will discuss her own entrepreneurial success in the baking business.
King’s story is simple, yet significant: at the age of 11, she started baking her famed crispy chocolate chip cookies and selling them at her parents’ farmstead to buy her own clothes. At 20, she was faced with having to supplement the funds for her college education and thus finally opened up a bakery and made her cottage industry into a legitimate wholesale business, selling to gourmet shops across Manhattan and Long Island.
Never ceasing to climb, King has now been dazzling fellow sugar-fiends with her euphoric classic for more than 30 years. Not only has she expanded the flavor selection for her signature thin and crispy cookies, but King has added a myriad of other gourmet sweets to her collection: walk into the original Southampton boutique-style bakery and you will find an array of muffins, pies, cakes, brownies and coffees, plus a selection of gluten-free and/or vegan options.
Though selling 80 percent of her company, Tate’s Bake Shop, King has been able to maintain a sufficient role in the establishment, particularly in the product development. Throughout her reign over the baking industry, Kathleen King’s passion is clear: “It’s easy for me to do,” says Kathleen, “because that’s who I am.”
In the three-course luncheon held at Cowfish in Hampton Bays on Thursday, September 29th from 12 to 3 p.m., King will discuss the rocky road of establishing and maintaining one’s own business, specifically the endurance required.
