Southampton Animal Shelter Goes On Another Mobile Adventure

"Feral cats are born in the wild and live in colonies throughout the East End," noted Linda Goldsmith, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation (SASF) Public Relations Administrator. "Cat owners who allow their un-neutered/spayed cats to roam create the problem in neighborhoods everywhere."

To address the local homeless animal population, the Southampton Animal Shelter Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic headed to the Henry Pfiefer Community Center in Calverton on Friday, February 6th. While at their destination, SASF provided low cost spay and neuters, as well as micro chipping and vaccinations.

In early 2014, Southampton Animal Shelter Foundation and North Fork Animal Welfare League (NFAWL) teamed up to help Riverhead Town, Southold Town, and the surrounding areas provide low cost spay and neuter services. The two East End animal organizations joined forces for their trap, neuter, release (TNR) program, which helps lower the number of feral cats in the area.

"The North Fork Animal Welfare League recognizes that we cannot adopt our way out of the companion animal overpopulation problem," expressed Gillian Pultz, NFAWL Executive Director. "Spay/neuter is the most important tool we can use to reduce the numbers of unwanted animals in our shelters. Our collaboration with the Southampton Animal Shelter's Mobile Spay/Neuter Clinic embodies the core mission of the League, a decrease in the number of unwanted and abused animals through a comprehensive approach including spay/neuter, education and active cooperation with our extended shelter and rescue community."
