Thomas Gilbert, Jr, 30, was arrested and charged on Monday, January 5, 2015, with the murder of his father, Wainscott Capital Partner's fund manager and founder Thomas Gilbert, Sr. The 70-year-old senior Gilbert was found shot dead in his Beekman Place apartment in New York City on Sunday night after an alleged dispute with his son over a reduction in his monthly allowance.

Investigators have detailed to reporters that Gilbert, Jr. entered his parents Manhattan residence in the early afternoon on Sunday and asked his mother, Shelley Rea Gilbert, to leave to fetch him a sandwich. Upon her return around 3:30 pm she discovered her husband alone on the floor in their bedroom with a fatal bullet wound to the head.

"The gun was resting on his chest with his left hand covering it," NYPD Chief of Investigations Robert Boyce said at a press conference regarding the .40 Glock 22 found at the scene. He described it as a "staged crime scene."

Upon further investigation police uncovered evidence at Gilbert, Jr's Chelsea apartment that lead to his arrest. "We obtained some evidence: two magazine clips, which are .40 caliber, which is the gun used at Beekman Place homicide," Boyce said.

The Gilberts, in addition to their Manhattan residence, own a Hamptons estate in the Georgica section of East Hampton and were members of the exclusive Maidstone Club. A graduate of Princeton University and Harvard Business School, Gilbert, Sr. founded Wainscott Capital Partners in 2011 after decades of success on Wall Street. The fund, reportedly valued at $200M focuses of healthcare and biotech.

Tommy Gilbert however did not enjoy the same success as his father. After graduating from his father's alma mater Princeton University in 2009 he remained unemployed and living in an apartment in Chelsea with the financial support of his parents. A frequent fixture in the Hamptons who liked to surf, Gilbert, Jr. was in the middle of troubles that led him to court. In court documents obtained by Hamptons.com Gilbert, Jr. was charged with criminal contempt in the second degree in September 2014 for a misdemeanor offense for violating an order of protection. At approximately 7:30 pm on Monday, September 1, 2014, Gilbert, Jr. violated the order, issued to Peter Smith in June 2014, while at Sagg Main Beach in Sagaponack. He is due to report at 9:00 am in the Town of Southampton Justice Court for that charge on February 2, 2015. He has also been implicated in the September 15, 2014, fire that destroyed a 19th century mansion in Sagaponack. No charges have been filed in that case at this time however the New York Post reports that police suspect arson to be the cause of the blaze.
