Michael Schumer and Michele Lehat, two 17-year-olds from Long Island, will host the 3rd Annual Charity Tennis Tournament, "Points for Patriots," on Sunday, August 3, 2014, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. This round robin, doubles tournament will take place at Le Club Tennis in Westhampton Beach, and is open to the public.
Over the past two years, the tournament has raised a remarkable $30,000 and gained support from Suffolk County, local celebrities, and dozens of neighboring businesses. The biggest honor, according to Schumer, who founded the 1st Annual Points for Patriots in 2011, was welcoming the Gabreski Air National Guard's presentation of the colors, prior to the start of the 2012 competition.
"With thousands of troops returning from Iraq
and Afghanistan, support of their ongoing needs is more critical than ever, particularly medically," said Schumer and Lehat. "Our nation's heroes deserve our support and hosting a fun tennis event is the least we can do."
This year, Schumer and Lehat anticipate welcoming about 70 players and 100 guests in total, including members of the Town of Southampton Council as well as a professional DJ. All proceeds from the event will go directly to the construction of Traumatic Brain Injury and PTSD rehabilitation centers across the country, most notably the Center for the Intrepid and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence. The event will include a competitive but friendly tennis experience that includes great prizes, refreshments and raffles. The entry fee is $50 per player.
The Intrepid Fallen Heroes Fund is a leader in supporting the men and women of the Armed Forces as well their families. The Fund was established fourteen years ago and has provided over 150 million dollars in support of severely injured veterans as well as for the families of these fallen heroes.
Entry to "Points for Patriots" is free.
