To commemorate for the 200th birthday of a Southampton born slave who overcame hardship to become a local legend and a prominent figure in U.S. History, a movement is underway to relaunch the Agawam Ferry in the village of Southampton. The reopening will honor Pyrrhus Concer
who first developed and operated the shuttle boat in the mid-1800's, transporting passengers from the village to the beach.
A group of Southampton residents hopes to run Pyrrhus' ferry route again and are proposing to run a daily ferry from sunrise to sunset throughout the months of July and August. Passengers would be transported from Agawam Park
to Gin Lane and back on the ferry, named for and inspired by Pyrrhus.
Pyrrhus Concer ferry tickets will soon be available for purchase if all goes as scheduled. For more information and to contribute to the cause, visit www.agawamferry.org.
