The Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons, Inc. (ARF) recently participated in their sixth puppy mill rescue this year. Thanks to a group of volunteer drivers, the Rescue Road Warriors, 30 breeder dogs were saved from a puppy mill in Missouri and transported to New York. Currently 20 are safely at ARF in East Hampton while the other ten are resting at the Kent Animal Shelter in Calverton.
Each dog will be examined, treated for any conditions, neutered and vaccinated and then will be available for adoption. ARF notes some have typical ailments of puppy mills dogs like injured feet (from living on wire floors) or rotten teeth but, others are physically fine, just tremendously shy from a lack of human interaction. Highly coveted breeds including Maltese, Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers, Shih Tzu, Toy Poodles, and Coton de Tulear were rescued.
According to the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), Missouri is ranked among the Nation’s worst for puppy mill conditions.
ARF is located at 90 Daniels Hole Road in East Hampton. For more information call 631-537-0400 or visit www.arfhamptons.org.
