“Discover Suffolk County Parks Day,” was established by legislators to encourage locals to take advantage of local parks and recreational resources. The resolution which was originally proposed by Legislator Jay Schneiderman, and signed into law by Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone, declares June 27th, 2013 as “Discover Suffolk County Parks Day.”
Visitors will be permitted to pay a discounted rate at all county parks on that day, and Bellone hopes that guests will be encouraged to not only continue to visit the “vast array of ecosystems” and “beautiful scenery,” but also to participate in the Suffolk County Parks Green Key Card program. This program allows participants to purchase a Green Key Card and continue to receive discounted rates for a variety of park services year round, with additional discounts extended to senior citizens, past and present military personnel, and volunteer firefighters and ambulance personnel.
According to Legislator Schneiderman, the measure was inspired by a noticeably increased trend of Suffolk County residents remaining on Long Island during the summer, rather than journeying elsewhere. He expects this legislation will motivate visitors to “explore these opportunities close to home,” and hopefully establish a more permanent and widespread appreciation of the wonderful parks in the area and the impressive recreation resources at their disposal.
