Easy Container Gardens

Home Dek-Decor planters fit right over the fence or
deck top rail.

Southampton - Even as the entire East Coast gets pelted with snow, gardeners are plotting and planning for gorgeous grounds this spring and summer. But what if you have a small space? Not to worry, there are several planters out there made with all sorts of materials to fit your decor and space issues.

A unique planter for railings on decks by Home Dek-Decor ($12.99 to $19.99) sits on top of the railing as opposed to traditional railing planters that hang over one side. This solution offers everyone on both sides a full view of the lovely flowers you've planted. The planters come in three colors (green, white, and terracotta) and two styles, 12-inch round or 24-inch long rectangular. No mounting screws are needed and they come in four-inch or six-inch molded bottoms to accommodate any deck or fence top rail.

Frost-proof glazed ceramic urns are a traditional choice.

Going a bit more traditional, frost-proof glazed ceramic urns (starting at $35) look beautiful on front entryways overflowing with perennials. Sizes and shapes vary from small, windowsill-sized pots to large statement-making planters perfect by a pool. Colors and patterns are limited by only your imagination. They are gorgeous to look at, though not so easy to move, and easy to maintain if planted properly. Start by filling the bottom with a few pieces of broken terracotta pots for airation and drainage. Then add enriched soil and plant, water regularly.

Foam and fiberglass planters are lightweight and have the look of traditional planters, best of all they are relatively inexpensive compared to their ceramic counterparts (starting at $10). As with ceramic planters good drainage is key so add a few small holes in the bottom.

For those not ready to start an entire vegetable patch,
test drive the idea with an EarthBox.

These planters are all well and good for flower lovers but what if you'd like to grow a few veggies. For those not ready to start an entire vegetable patch, test drive the idea with an EarthBox ($49.99), available in green and terracotta and only 29-inches wide and 13-inches tall. Developed by commercial farmers using recycled materials, this four-piece growing system comes ready to plant - just add the seeds and water. Compact and portable, wheels help you move it from shade to sun while the built-in watering and feeding systems keep your plants in perfect shape without the risk of over watering. A mulch cover keeps weeds from taking hold. For growing tall or climbing plants like tomatoes and beans, there is an aluminum staking component. Best yet, the reusable system is great year after year and a replant kit ($13) can be found at most garden centers.

Drop by your favorite garden center for these and more options to get planting in style.
