The Clam Bar Opens for the Summer 2008 Season

The Clam Bar (At Napeague, Montauk Highway, Amagansett, 631-267-6348) in Amagansett re-opens for the season, that's a sure sign of spring! This is the earliest the Clam Bar has ever opened in their 20-year existence. The classic seafood snack bar is open Saturdays and Sundays at 12 noon for lunch and dinner until dark, weather permitting, of course.

Chris Miller Leads April/May Wine Appreciation Course

Wine expert Chris Miller (1 Kennedy Drive, East Quogue, 516-639-3085 or www.chrismillerwines.com), will lead a course in wine appreciation on Long Island from April 17 to May 29.

Held at the Suffolk County Community College's Culinary Arts & Hospitality Center (20 East Main Street, Riverhead, 631-548-2502, www3.sunysuffolk.edu), the 14-hour primer runs for seven weeks each Thursday, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., from April 17 through May 29. Tuition is $80 per section, or $450 for the entire course.

The course is the second one this year, and the first in a series, offered on Long Island by Miller in his role as co-founder of "The Sommelier Wine Academy," a new provider of professional level wine courses on Long Island and in Westchester. He designed this course to give students a basic understanding of the main grape varietals and wine styles. Beyond tasting techniques, wine basics and viticulture, the course covers traditional whites, aromatic whites, cool climate reds, big and warm climate reds, and sparking and sweet wines.
